Muscle spasms can cause severe muscle pain. In some cases, muscle spasms may also result in skin bruises. Muscle spasms occur often due to the muscle involuntary contractions.
The common spasm symptom is: the affected muscle can not relax itself. The muscle spasms often affect the following muscles: calf muscles (gastrocnemius), thigh muscles, feet muscles, hand muscles and abdomen muscles.
The exact cause is unknown, but the risk factors may include: muscle fatigue, dehydration, electrolyte depletion, neuromuscular control altering, extreme heat. Athletes are more likely to have muscle spasms or cramps. To ease up the cramps, gently stretch and massage the cramping muscle.
