The hamstring muscles are located in the posterior thigh, and include the following muscles: semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris. These muscles are prone to straining, tearing and other injuries.
The quadriceps muscles are often stronger, while the hamstring muscles are relatively weaker; this imbalance tends to cause hamstring stress. Hamstring injuries are common, especially in the following activities: track and field sports (e.g. sprinting), football, basketball and tennis.
The common symptoms include: hamstring pain, swelling, stiffness, ecchymosis, palpable mass. Resting and ice packs can help to reduce pain and swelling. Physiotherapy or athletic therapy may also be used to help the muscles heal.
