Metatarsals are located in the following region: from the ankle to the toe phalange. Metatarsal fractures are the most common foot injuries. Metatarsals are prone to fractures, especially the second, third and fourth metatarsals.
Direct trauma or blows can often cause metatarsal fractures - especially the fifth metatarsal fracture. The usual causes include: overuse, repetitive rotating or jumping, sudden twisting, ankle injury, football.
The common symptoms include: severe foot pain, foot swelling, ecchymosis, bruising, weight-bearing difficulty, walking difficulty. Resting and ice therapy can often reduce the swelling and pain. Metatarsal fractures usually requires emergency medical help.
