Arthroplasty is an orthopedic surgery, used to relieve joint pain and restore the joint function. The common arthroplasty methods are: joint resection and joint reconstruction.
Resection method involves removing some bone, in order to reduce friction and pain, but the joint stability will be affected. Reconstruction method uses plastic or metal prosthesis to reshape the joint.
In some cases, total joint replacement may be needed. Total joint replacement is normally used to treat severe knee and hip problems. Joints resection or joints reconstruction are usually used to treat shoulder, elbow, ankle, and finger joints.
