Bursitis refers to the bursa inflammation. When the bursa becomes inflamed or swollen, it loses its gliding surface and causes more friction.

The following factors usually cause bursitis: repetitive use, squeezing pressure, traumatic injury, rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory conditions. The common bursitis types include: kneecap (prepatellar) bursitis, shoulder bursitis, elbow (olecranon) bursitis, hip (trochanteric) bursitis.

In some cases, bursitis may encounter bacterial infections. If the bursitis infection is serious, immediate medical attention is required. Antibiotic treatment can often help to alleviate the infection.
